Smoke Alarms To keep Your Property Safe

What Are Smoke Alarms And Why Are They Important ?

Smoke alarms are a big part of home safety as these devices detect smoke in the premises and therefore warn you in the event of a fire so you can react in time. Placed on the roof of the room, the smoke alarms are ideally placed to detect the rising smoke.  There are two types of smoke alarms, photoelectric and ionization alarms. While the photoelectric device detects the smoke using a beam of light to sense the smoke, ionization alarms on the other hand, detect the smoke inside of the device, using a chamber with a small electrical current. Either way, the used method will cause the device to release an alarming sound that allows us to react quickly.

Why Should We Use Smoke Alarms?

Ideally, these alarms should be located around several places around your home or office, so fires in any location on the property can be detected as quickly as possible. That allows us to react accordingly and make sure we can save ourselves and our belongings and reduce the damage. When placed correctly, the smoke alarm can simplify the job of the fireworker and find the exact location of the fire as quickly as possible. These life saving devices are not only important in order to protect yourself, your family and your home, it is in fact a legal requirement to have them installed at your property.

How Should We Install Smoke Alarms To Keep The Property Safe?

In Order to make sure you comply with all regulations, it might be best to seek help from a professional company like Glasshouse Home Safety for example, that specializes in smoke alarm installation, smoke alarm testing and smoke alarm repairs. Usually, all smoke alarm services include the inspection of your property, so the professional can then tell you exactly what services need to be performed to ensure your safety.

But not only home owners should worry about installing smoke alarms to their property, especially property managers should make sure all of their buildings comply with current legislations. In fact, Since January 2022, all dwellings being sold or leased need to comply with new rules that include an interconnected smoke alarm system and smoke alarms that are no older than 10 years.

How Do I Know My Smoke Alarms Are Working?

Smoke alarms do require some maintenance in order to work properly. Each device should be tested at least once a month to make sure the battery didn’t die . You can do that by holding the button at the bottom until you hear the alarming tone. In order to turn off the sound, you might have to press the button another time.

Additionally, every device should be vaccumend at least twice a year to remove dust and cobwebs to ensure excellent performance in the event of an emergency.

Another thing you should consider is to keep your alarm free from infestations, You might want to try an insect spray on the outside of the device, however, you need to be careful to not spray any inside of the device.

Last but not least, the battery needs to be replaced at least once a year. Usually your detector lets you know when batteries are running low by beeping a low tone every few seconds. It can be recommended to read the manufacturer’s instructions to find out the best way to replace the batteries of your device.

As you can see, smoke detectors are an important factor when keeping your home or property safe at all times.
